MacDonough is an elementary school in the North End of Middletown, CT.

I volunteered at the school during my Junior and Senior years of college. I worked in a 3rd grade classroom teaching math, reading, and writing skills to individuals and small groups. I created and implemented Social Studies units around maps, community and Middletown history. In addition, I ran Free Book Friday, a program that gives a free book to every student in the school each Friday. I also solicited donations for the CMT (Connecticut Mastery Test) Celebration and taught a tap class.

In the Fall 2009, I worked with a student who was visiting the US from China for the year. He spoke no English upon arrival. I planned lessons to teach him English and worked with him several times a week.

I earned a Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2010 for my work at MacDonough.

Are learning and achievement always the same thing? Can you have learning without achievement? Achievement without learning?

What does it mean to be a "good" school?

What is the role of a school principal?

What can schools do to improve their school culture? How can assemblies and incentive systems help this effort?

What is the purpose of education?

How can a school make use of the resources it has to improve the quality of the education it provides for its students?
